The downside of having a great sound system in your car is that other cars stock sound systems suddenly sound like utter shite.

truefact.
The HK in my E46 makes the stereo in my fiance's Insight sound like tin cans connected by string.

I refuse to listen to high-end headphones because I like my Koss Portapros too much and don't want to be ruined by hearing something better.

I helped a family member replace the stock speakers in a 2000 Saturn over the weekend. Two words: cardboard cones. Four more: rotten rubber, completely gone. One of the existing speakers even had a chunk missing out of the cone.
Even without splurging on the speakers much we couldn't help but come out ahead of *that*.

The Stringbean has infinities all around and a powered infinity sub behind the driver seat (nobody sits back there and free back massage).
The uplander however has factory crapwaffle speakers, most I'm pretty sure are blown and at least one that sounds like a deflating balloon if any bass attempts to come out of it.

one of my friends is convinced his (stock) system is awesome and will always blast it. I guess he doesn;t mind the speakers rattling when the bass comes it

my TL has an AM/FM/XM/CD/DVD/Aux/Cassette Dolby Pro Logic II surround-sound system by ELS with 8 speakers including a factory sub.
My MR2 has two 30-year old 4" speakers in the dash :)

Ugh, gross. I'm spending obscene amounts of time piecing together a junkyard system for my sister's Silverado. Found a truck box in my friend's garage in a junked S10 that was designed for a 10" and two 6x9s. Grabbed the stock 6x9 speakers from a 90s LeSabre with the Concert Sound II (seriously, ACDelco did a GOOD job on those speakers. They make great mids/highs) and I'm trying to repair the surround on an otherwise-fine 10" sub. Now all I need is to find a 2.1 channel amp for it.

I have the system from a Cadillac Brougham in my Cutlass. 8 ohm systems > 4 ohm systems.

98 Civic stock speakers. The worst thing I have ever heard. Replaced with two Pioneer 6x9s and a couple Pioneer 6 inchers in the doors. Memphis audio sub in a custom sealed box hooked up to some early-2000s "1000 watt" (yeah right) sub and all hooked up to a Sony head unit with built in low pass (for the sub) and high pass (for everything else) filters. I have it set up so the sub just fills in the bass without being overpowered (so I don't care that the amp isn't really 1000 watts because it isn't being pushed near hard enough for it to matter), but when I play something like dubstep it comes into its own and it can shake the hell out of that little car. The best thing is I can turn the whole mess all the way up without distortion, at which point I have to leave the car because it is physically painful.

If you want a set of good 6x9s for free go to a junkyard and pull some from a Buick LeSabre made after 1994 with Concert Sound II. I am seriously impressed with them as mid and mid-highs. They still need a tweeter for the really high stuff, but they're damn good for just being a single-aperture speaker.

Sadly, the speaker sizes are really weird in my car, and therefore those won't fit.

Where are you putting the subs? I built this to fit under my former Sport Trac's rear seat. Before the sport trac I had a regular explorer so the space wasn;t an issue. I had 2-10's. One of them was damages by a bike pedal. Fro the Sport trac I only went with 1 sub. There wasn;t enough room under one seat so I added on a second box to get the proper cubic air space. the two boxes were sealed together with holes so the air could pass from one to the other. It was a big pain in the ass to get the box to fit around the shape of the floor and bench legs.

I just stuffed mine in the trunk. It isn't secured very well and goes "thunk" if I go over a significant bump.
